Mr. Spencer received his basic training at Fort Jackson, SC. He served as a foot soldier in Vietname where he was issued a light weapon rifle, hand grenades, book pack with food and sleeping gear. While on duty he would participate in search and destroy missions which were to search villages for any enemy activity. His main mission was LZ XRAY (landing zone xray). The objective was to protect this area so helicopters could bring in and remove American soldiers.
Mr. Spencer earned a Purple Heart for his dedication as a result of a wound sustained while acting as pointman on a patrol. He incurred shrapnel in his soldier and was immediately flown to a medical tent where he finished out his service time.
